In 2001, two individuals approached the City with one great idea. After several brainstorm sessions with three others, the Mountain Market was formed. The mission was to create a venue for local farmers and artists to sell their goods and to improve the variety of products available to the community that are locally made, baked, grown or raised in the Fernie area. It was a small and quaint beginning, with some weeks only having three vendors. But, it wouldn't stay small for long!
Now in 2009, eight years later, the market has blossomed to a average of thirty-five vendors weekly. From local organic growers selling fresh picked fruit, veggies, herbs and flowers; to herbalists crafting soaps and fragrances; while bakers sell their tasty pies and homemade sourdough bread; and local artisans showcase their latest creations. Special events like the Corn Roast in August, brings locally grown fresh Taber corn to Fernie, and the Mountain Music project brings local musicians to perform outdoors throughout the summer in the park. These projects as well as others were created to enhance the market experience.
Sunday's are now known as market day in Fernie!
Fernie's Mountain Market takes place every Sunday, from Canada Day to Labor Day weekend from 10am to 2pm. A member of the British Columbia Association of Farmers Markets (www.bcfarmersmarket.org), we actively work to connect growers and connoisseurs of the locally grown, as well as, artisans and aficionados of the hand crafted.
Our guidelines “you make it, you bake it, you grow it” ensures a quality market experience for all.
